Matulji
Matulji is located nearby Opatija and even though it doesn't have access to the sea it's known as "gates of Kvarner", because of the railway station, built in the middle of the 19th century, bringing foreign tourists on Opatija Riviera. Even today, Matulji is representing "gates" or "entrance" onto Opatija Riviera, because of the fast road in direction of Opatija and because of the two border crossings Rupa and Pasjak. One of the most important dates, especially for the development of Matulji, is 24. June 1873., the day when the first train from Vienna arrived on the station and till today many tourists are using it to come here on holiday. Matulji is connection between Kvarner and mountainous inland, ensuring to its guests a good night sleep in the cool summer nights. Bicycle riding, walking and hiking in Lisina Forest Park, Učka Mountain, Veprinac or nearby Kastav are some of the advantages offered to tourists and the sea is less than 2 kilometers away. Important events in Matulji are: Carnival (january – february) – where the old costumes are still preserved. In municipality of Matulji there is the biggest number of bell ringer groups and we differentiate the bell ringers groups of Bregi, Brgud, Mučići, Mune, Rukavac, Zvoneća, Žejane, Frlanija, Vlahov Breg and Korensko. Together with bell ringer group of Halubje, the bell ringers from the municipality of Matulji have been added in 2009. on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
